A recent Guardian article* citing sources including Accenture, Kantar UK Insights and Experian had some interesting statistics which show why your online presence is so important this time of year:

- Traffic to retail websites over the 2015 festive period increased by 270%

- 21% of small business revenue is taken over the festive period

- A quarter of British shoppers say that discounts of only 20-29% encourage them to buy

With so many sales now taking place online - and more new customers to attract - it's important to make sure your website is ready to take advantage of the festive and New Year period. So, we've put together some top tips to make sure your website is up for the challenge.

 

1. Don't be shy

Put your best offers in a highly visible position on your homepage. Big discounts or free shipping on high value orders are a great way to encourage purchases. So don't hide your best offers - we know that the more customers have to search, the greater the chance you'll lose them. 

2. Use pop-ups that pay 

No, not the pop-ups offering miraculous weight loss or massive work-from-home earnings. Smart pop-ups which talk to specific visitors and those who've taken a particular journey around your site. They're a great way of promoting a deal that's relevant to a particular visitor, or rewarding a repeat customer on your site.  

3. Be more mobile

The proportion of visitors who access your site via mobile will be increasing year on year. So it's definitely worth making sure your site is mobile optimised. This will result in mobile visitors staying on your site for longer. And more importantly, according to Internet Retailer, mobile shoppers will convert 160% more often on mobile-friendly sites.  

4. Pictures and words count

Online shops offer convenience, but they are limited to video, pictures and words when it comes to selling their products and services. So, give yourself the best chance of securing sales by making sure you are using the best possible imagery, along with descriptions which are enticing, accurate and up-to-date.
